A JOURNEY THROUGH JAZZ

Mike Hall

A Journey Through Jazz will guide students through the essential features of the jazz idiom. Newcomers to jazz will find a sympathetic environment in which to take their first steps while more experienced students will be provided with challenging material and ideas to extend their existing improvisation skills.

The course is centred on the rehearsal and performance of a number of jazz arrangements with each piece introducing a different musical style and relevant approach to improvisation. Theoretical and historical elements are introduced as and when appropriate. A course concert will take place towards the end of the week.

Mike Hall Biography

Participants should have a reasonable command of their instrument including a basic knowledge of major scales roughly equivalent to grades 4 - 5 classical or jazz, although no formal qualifications are required. It is stressed that no previous experience of improvisation is necessary and we particularly welcome musicians with classical skills wishing to explore jazz for the first time.
